In late afternoon on February 19, 2007 in San Francisco, a friend and I attended a fund-raising event in celebration of Sen. Barbara Boxer’s 30 years in politics. Sen. Barack Obama had been scheduled to be the guest speaker at this event a year ago and had no idea at that time that he would be running for President of the United States at the time of Senator Boxer’s event.
Upon the doors to the Grand Ballroom of the St. Francis Hotel being opened, I quickly scurried up to the rope in front of the stage where Sen. Obama would be speaking. The air was electric with anticipation as the crowd awaited his arrival. The joy in the room was increasing, the enthusiasm of the crowd was palpable. Suddenly…there he was! The room was wild with excitement. I was deeply moved and honored to be in the presence of this incredible man. As he spoke, his words resonated in my heart. He was speaking my truth. To say I was overwhelmed would be a huge understatement. My heart filled with hope as he spoke. He is so honest, so truthful, so real, so committed to the American people.
Barack came down from the stage and shook hands and spoke to the people standing at the rope. When he came to me I put out my hand and he held it while I spoke. I said, “You keep on being authentic, Barack, and I’ll keep on being hopeful.” He enthusiastically responded, “That’s right, yes, that’s it.” I reached out and gave him a hug and a big kiss on the cheek, and as he started to move on I said, “I AM a Barack Obama Mama!” He grinned from ear-to-ear. Barack Obama Mama was born!
I walked away from Barack Obama with tears falling down my cheeks. I knew that I had just shared a heart-touching, joyous, soulful moment with him. That experience changed my life and my commitment is to share my Barack Obama moment with as many people as I can and to invite you all to join in supporting his presidential campaign.
